Roadside Management

The Trust receives more input on how roadsides should be managed from the members than any other land management topic. This is not surprising because the roadsides are how most members interact with the island on a daily basis. In order to address this issue fully, the Stewardship Committee hired three outside consultants with expertise in landscape design and environmental consulting to evaluate our roadside management and to suggest areas for improvement. The result is a comprehensive roadside management plan.

Safety is the number one concern with how our roadsides should be managed.

Aesthetics are also a major component of how are roadsides are managed. The driving experience should be enjoyable. While driving the roads of Spring Island you will experience a wide variety of habitats, from open fields to thick forests. Neighborhood areas (Old Tabby Links, Walker Landing, Bonney Shore) are maintained with a higher level of grooming. In other areas where roadsides border the nature preserves, roadside management consists primarily of mowing the roadside only, providing the "country road" feel. If you have concerns about the roadsides, please tell the chair of the Stewardship Committee.
