Matt Turnbull

Landscape Ecologist

Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a graduate of Temple University and the Professional Horticulture Program at Longwood Gardens, Matt has worked in horticulture and native plants for the past decade. He’s worked at Bartram’s Garden, Quaker Hill Native Plant Garden, Mt. Cuba Center, UNCW and the South Carolina Botanical Garden. In those positions, Matt was exposed to and educated in the subtleties and beauty of native plants, specific plant communities, propagation, and naturalistic design. During this time, much of his work focused on the plants and ecosystems of the Carolinas. After working in botanical garden leadership roles, he sought to return to the southeast and to work in conservation and preservation of the plants of the Carolinas.

His specialties and interests include native plant design, plant history, niche propagation, meadow design and establishment, and the world of carnivorous plants. With his wife, Kate, and three wonderful daughters, he is looking forward to living in the LowCountry. Matt joined the Trust team in early October 2022.

The mission of the Spring Island Trust is to preserve and protect Spring Island’s environment and cultural history, providing education, expertise, and leadership in the conservation of natural resources throughout the Lowcountry.
